We had met Blake when he came to work at Estes. I think he was just out of high school. So young and inexperienced in the work world but determined to make his mark. That he did too, as his record shows.
He worked his way up to outbound supervisor and did a great job of it. He was so respectful, nice and kind to me (John & Tina's teachings). I had some health issues that would cause me some problems at times, Blake would be the first to help me out if he knew I was having trouble.
When Blake came to me and Gene about he and Samantha getting married at our home on Logan Martin Lake (him being a fisherman, seemed like the right place), we were so honored. Of course, our answer was a resounding YES!
So began the planning for their BIG DAY. We had another house on our property that would be theirs for all their needs. Gene and I watched their excitement, laughter, nervousness, yes even some anger and frustration, which is normal for pre-wedding planning. We'd just grin at one another, knowing how all this goes hand in hand, having two sons who'd been down this same road.
They did a fantastic job pulling everything together. Their wedding day came on a beautiful sunny day. I'm sorry to say I can't remember the date, I want to say it was in September. Gene had had heart surgery and I a knee injury during this time frame and my memory isn't what it use to be either.
The children were so precious in their outfits and did their parts wonderfully. All the guest were under the tent they had provided, by the water. I remember Blake coming down in his casual off-white outfit like he didn't have a care in the world. He was probably shaking like a leaf in the wind on the inside.
Then the beautiful bride Samantha made her way down to be joined in holy matrimony with the love of her life Blake Steeley. The ceremony was lovely, with a few moments of laughter. I never knew what it was about but they had "fun" getting married. I thought that was pretty neat.
The reception and picture taking followed. I have many pictures of this wedding myself. It was the first of three we had at the lake. These guys had a ball laughing, dancing, and taking in the night. At that time they had no idea of the memories they had begun as their life together as husband and wife.
Gene and I felt blessed to have shared in this very special day of Blake's life. We were kinda like a "special connection" if you will, to Blake.
There is also another "special connection" Blake shares with Gene....Exactly one year ago December 17, 2015, Gene had his Heaven Going too. Maybe they are fishing in the Crystal Sea together.
Samantha, if you get to read this one day, please know there are many who love and care about you and your babies. I DO KNOW the pain and everything you're feeling, if you ever need to talk, cry, scream, or ask questions of ANY kind I'm available 24/7. NEVER hesitate to call me. I don't work and don't sleep much either. My prayers and heart are with you baby.
Much Love,
Mrs. Sparks (as Blake always called me)
