Obituary for Betty Lou Bullard (Horton)

Betty Lou (Horton) Bullard, age 87, of Birmingham, previously of Cleveland, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 30th, 2018 at UAB Palliative Care Unit. Born November 27, 1931 in Blount County to Lon Horton and Louell Horton Tidwell, she became a life long member of Green's Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir and playing the organ and piano. She had many wonderful friends in her church family and was active in the CPW. Betty retired from Blue Bell, Inc at age 62, where she worked as a seamstress, then as a supervisor, and eventually achieved Certified Auditor status. A few years later she developed congestive heart failure and moved to Birmingham to be near her two daughters and their families. For the past 19 years, Betty lived in the neighborhood of Inverness and enjoyed being spoiled by her whole family.

Left to cherish special memories are daughters and son-in-laws Betty Nyoka and William David Bryan, Ava Lou and Charles K. McPherson; grandchildren Steven Phillips and wife Sarah, Lori Lynchard and husband Lane, Amy Bryan Baggett and husband Bayron, and April L. Phillips; great grandchildren Madeline Phillips, Bryan Lynchard, Mary Beth Phillips, Harley Baggett, and Bayley Baggett; sister-in-law Ossie Horton and step sister Lois Baty; many nieces and nephews, and other extended family members; and all of her sweet friends of Green's Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She is preceded in death by her parents Lon Horton and Louell Horton Tidwell; brother James Louie Horton, sisters Alsie Horton Cornelius, Gladys Horton Blackwood.

Betty was a generous, selfless mother, grandmother and friend. She helped move her grandchildren through college and into adult life then later, helped take care of five newborn great grandchildren. She enjoyed many shopping trips, vacations, eating out with her family and spending quality time with her daughters Nyoka and Ava. She never lost touch with her old friends in Blount County, especially her church family. She was a person of strong faith, believing in the power and strength of Jesus Christ's love, and eternal life in Heaven.

The family will receive friends at the Green's Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. Funeral Services will be held following at 11:00 am in Green's Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Bro. David Lenski officiating. Interment to be in the adjoining cemetery.

The family would like to thank Dr. Robert Brock, her cardiologist for 19 years, Compassus Hospice; the wonderful caregivers at Fair Haven, especially Angela, Cherrie, and Edward, who the family will never forget. Also the dedicated nurses and doctors at the UAB Palliative and Comfort Care Unit, who lovingly made sure she was comfortable in her last days.

Blount County/Cleveland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
